September 10 - 11. TALLINN  In a couple of days we managed to take in much of old town Tallinn.  We could have moved on to Riga but liking our comfortable dorm set up with its 10-BaseT connection and sporadic episodes of "Fraser" on the TV we decided to stay a couple of extra days.  I devoted the days to working on the journal and the worsening weather made it easy to take a break from sightseeing.  Rob made his ritual visit to the National Bank and secured uncirculated kuuna notes.  2002  marked the 10th anniversary of minting money for Estonia and with their pending accession to the EU it would be a short lived currency.
One evening we met up with a fellow Berkeley Alum and Danville native, Steve Roman, now a resident of Tallinn.  Thanks to his position with the "In Your Pocket" guides he knew the cities eateries inside and out and introduced us to a tasty Indian restaurant outside of the old town area.  It was a nice break for us to meet up with someone from back home.  We shared experiences and were able to get the local view of life in Tallinn - often very cold as we understand it. |
